Budući da se još uvijek mučim s govorenjem hrvatskog jezika, pomoć Ive u izgovoru hrvatskog prijevoda engleskog vokabulara bila je ključna za uspjeh nastave. Neizmjerno sam joj zahvalna na pomoći koju mi pruža tijekom cijelog procesa podučavanja.
Tečaj engleskog jezika strukturiran je na sljedeći način: započinjemo s kratkim uvodom i ponavljanjem prethodne lekcije kako bismo provjerili što su zapamtili i zagrijali se za novi sadržaj. Nakon toga nastavljamo s dva vokabularna bloka i završavamo s nekoliko korisnih fraza. Nastojim korisnicima prenijeti praktično znanje engleskog jezika koje im može biti korisno u svakodnevnom životu. Nakon sata, Iva i ja odlazimo u studio i snimamo materijal koji smo taj dan podučavali, kako bi ga polaznici mogli slušati kod kuće i dodatno vježbati.
Teme koje smo obradili uključuju: posjet restoranu, prijevoz, kupovinu i ljetne aktivnosti.
Ovi satovi predstavljaju jedan od najdražih dijelova mog volonterskog angažmana u Udruzi IKS. Iskreno obožavam korisnike. Njihovo aktivno sudjelovanje i beskrajni entuzijazam glavni su razlog zašto s nestrpljenjem iščekujem srijedu – dan kada radim s tim divnim ljudima. ”

As part of her long-term volunteering through the European Solidarity Corps programme, Lucy, a volunteer from the Netherlands, is actively contributing to the work of Association IKS and promoting volunteerism through an exceptionally valuable and socially sensitive project – leading English language classes for people with visual impairments. The course is conducted in collaboration with the Association of the Blind of the Sisak-Moslavina County and has been held once a week for the past two and a half months.
What makes this course truly special is its individualized approach – the lessons are designed based on the real needs and interests of the participants themselves. Although Lucy is simultaneously learning the Croatian language, she uses her own learning process as an additional motivation for creating educational content that is both accessible and applicable to everyday life situations. This approach enables the participants not only to acquire basic language skills but also to become more confident in communication, better navigate everyday challenges, and participate more fully in social activities.
Each lesson is additionally recorded in a studio, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for individuals who may not be able to attend in-person classes, while also serving as a supplementary practice material for current course participants who receive it on CD. The audio lessons are currently available to all participants and will soon be published on the official website of Association IKS, making them accessible to future users and anyone interested.
This project embodies the core values of solidarity, inclusion, and intercultural exchange and serves as a powerful example of how volunteer engagement can have a deep and lasting impact on the local community.

”Udruga IKS and Dnevni centar slijepih have given me the opportunity to provide the beneficiaries of the blind association English Classes. I have been offered the creative freedom to design and structure the classes according to my vision. The first English class that I taught was about Darts, as this is one of their favourite pastime activities. Afterwards, the themes of the classes were decided by the beneficiaries, because I strongly feel that it is easier to learn a language when the students are interested in the material.
As I still struggle with speaking Croatian, the help of Iva with the pronunciation of the Croatian translation of the English vocabulary has been a crucial part of the classes. I am absolutely grateful for her help in the process of teaching the class.
The English classes are structured as follows: we start off with a small introduction and a recap of the last class, just to check what they remember and as a warm-up for the new material. After that, we continue with two vocabulary clusters and finish with some useful phrases. I try to teach the beneficiaries practical English to make sure that it benefits them. After the class, Iva and I go to the studio and record the material we taught the beneficiaries, so they can practice and revise what we learned at home.
The topics that we treated were visiting the restaurant, transportation, shopping, and summer activities.
These classes are one of the highlights of my volunteering at IKS. I genuinely adore the beneficiaries. Their active participation and endless enthusiasm are the reason why I cannot wait until it is Wednesday, the day I get to work with these lovely people.”
