It all started on 31st of August. After a full day of travelling, I was finally arriving in Petrinja where Sabina, my mentor, was waiting for me in the bus station. I went to the apartment feeling homesick because for the first time in my life I felt that I am all by myself for two months in a new country and there is no way back.

The day of September 1st was the day when all my worries were gone. I met the EVS volunteers and the girls working at the association and I felt that I knew them for a lifetime. Petrinja is not a big city, but it was fine for me because my hometown is pretty small too. In the afternoon we had to (yes, already) say goodbye to a volunteer that finished her program here and I still remember how everyone was crying and hugging each other… it was heartbreaking for me.

Life at the association was really nice because we were there all together laughing and sharing lots of knowledge about our experiences so far and also teaching each other our mother language. One month has passed and we only had two events in our schedule, because it is summer and the schools are closed. I can say that people here are not too open to new activities, probably because they are shy or they are not really used to this. Our event for International Youth Day had between the educational workshops a water-balloon fight and a glitter fight and in the beginning the kids didn’t want to come and have fun with us. There are so many opportunities for teenagers to go abroad and see that life can be different and how much you can develop yourself physically, mentally and  also in the working field.

In the Public Health area I can’t say that I have developed my knowledge so far. One aspect that I really like is the fact that Sabina is teaching me how to write Erasmus+ projects and also how to apply for it – I find it really helpful.

I take this internship as an opportunity to discover myself and to embrace everything that life gives me. I am beyond grateful for the friendships that I have made here so far, for travelling during the weekends, for learning how to deal with a problem by myself and for my slightly different way of thinking.
