kampanja za osnaživanje žena – žene s invaliditetom

This campaign is dedicated to the empowerment of all women, that is why this week, we decided to dedicate it to disabled women. Women’s movements are increasing for a couple of years now, demanding equality for all women, but we all tend to forget that women between themselves are not equal. Disabled women face what is called a double discrimination, their condition as women, means that they are facing the same discrimination and gender bias as all other women, but their disability also mean that they are even more vulnerable to it.

Discrimination against disabled women and girls happen in both developed and developing countries, sometimes they are obvious, like forbidding them to marry if they have a mental disability, sometimes less obvious, for instance, when girls are not provided the necessary help when going to school, or access to the working place. Tuesday’s post show us, that women are more likely to become disabled than men, because of gender bias. Disabled women face much more difficulties, in term of access to school, education, workplace, and are also particularly vulnerable to sexual violence.

We hope Tuesday’s post will give you a more precise idea about what disabled women are facing everyday.

The post was made thanks to the available data of: Human’s rights watch, and the UN. To see more information:

We are aware there are complexities to inequity. When it comes to discussing and creating spaces, which promote inclusivity and support for women with disabilities, we must be intentional. It is important to first become aware of how the environment, law, stereotypes, and personal interactions can be oppressive in nature. Once we take time to reflect and recognize these aspects, we can then put effort in enlightening ourselves and the spaces we are a part of.

Here are some questions and tips to reflect on how we can take some steps in promoting inclusive and supportive spaces for women with disabilities from our personal interactions to community organizations.

Self- Awareness:

How are we interacting with someone with a disability?

Is the language we use perpetuating negative stereotypes?

Are we making assumptions?

What practices or polices are oppressive and perpetuate discrimination?

Inclusivity:

The language we use should emphasize abilities one has rather than disability;

When we describe someone, they are more than a disability;

One’s disability should not be their defining characteristic & doesn’t need to be mentioned unless necessary;

The physical environment should be accessible to those with varying abilities;

An assessment, including the perspective of people with disabilities, will be most useful in understanding if the space is accessible and what to improve.

Ask:

Do not make assumptions about anyone you’re interacting with;

Through genuine curiosity, ask an individual about anything you may be unsure of

relating to their needs/preferences;

Remember each person is the expert in their own life!

Svjesni smo kompleksnosti nejednakosti.

Fizičko okruženje treba biti dostupno onima s različitim sposobnostima;

PITATI:

Ne radite pretpostavke o nekome s kim komunicirate;
Istinskom znatiželjom pitajte pojedinca o bilo čemu u što možda niste sigurni vezano za njihove potrebe / sklonosti;
