A longstanding partnership with Association Focus from Bulgaria has once again realised a mobility project for participants from Croatia. The partnership project is a Training Course on the topic of working with people with disabilities. Selected participants representing Association IKS were two people from Zagreb’s Association  of Disabled Workers, Anita Kaiser & Dubravka Hrgarek and our volunteer and teacher at the Primary school “Ivana Kukuljevića”, Sisak, Iva Gavranović. Here, we bring you their impressions of the Training in the Croatian and English language.

Impressions from participation in training “Different but equal” (MAY 16 – MAY 23, 2018, Pazardjik, Bulgaria)

We went to this educational business trip after we were notified by Association IKS or the Volunteer Centre of Petrinja about the possibility of participating in the training “Different but equal”, from 16 to 23 May 2018 in the town of Pazardjik in Bulgaria.

The project leader was the Bulgarian organization “Focus – European Center for Development “which has a longstanding rich experience in maintaining similar programs.

The training was held in English while the participants were mostly youngsters from 10 EU countries, more precisely three from each country. Travel, accommodation and food costs were fully funded by the Erasmus + program. The theme of the training was to exchange experiences in working with people with disabilities i.e. mental or physical impairment, learning about various methods of social integration and the like, topics that the organizer of this gathering believed will be able to improve and strengthen capacity of organizations like ours, our employees and volunteers.

The training was designed so that participants could take part in a variety of workshops throughout the day, discussions, and to acquire in a practical way skills useful for working with people, while in the evening we organized intercultural gatherings with presentations of each country and its particulars.

It was also impressive to visit a centre that cared about people with the highest physical and mental disabilities and the opportunity to personally convince ourselves how much volunteer work delivered by our colleagues contributes to beneficiaries and society at large.

The impressions from this trip are more than positive, mostly because of the variety of content which the organizers prepared for the training of the participants and the fact that the program was not based solely on lectures but on interactive activities as well. For example, we had tasks to devise psycho-drama, write a project, and so on, which would always be followed by a group discussion or exchange of experiences with other participants.

Therefore, we consider that organizers deserve every praise and we are sure they have helped us learn to contribute to the quality of our organization.

Iva Gavranović – As a representative of Association IKS, I participated in a training course called “Different but equal” in Pazardhik. The aim of the training was to increase the skills and competences of youth workers in working with people with disabilities. Participants from 10 countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, France and Turkey participated in the training. The host is the Fokus association from Pazardhik.

We participated in the following workshops and activities:

-tour of the city of Pazardhik,

– getting to know other participants,

– meeting volunteers from foreign countries who volunteer with persons with disabilities,

– profiling the target group, what do people with disabilities encounter and deal with in different countries,

–  stereotypes and prejudices about persons with disabilities,

– methods of working with persons with disabilities,

– exchange of experience in working with people with disabilities,

– promoting social inclusion in work with people with disabilities – art therapy,

-professional activities with the aim of encouraging the integration of persons with disabilities,

– programs involving persons with disabilities,

– social Entrepreneurship – development of programs geared towards people with disabilities,

– a visit to a social welfare institution where persons with disabilities are residing, meeting the beneficiaries and employees of the institution,

– a tour of the city of Plovdiv, the European City of Culture in 2019,

-marking “City Week”, visits to concerts and various activities during the week, getting to know the local culture and traditions,

-intercultural evenings -presenting our own country and its characteristics.

By taking part in this project, participants had the opportunity to work on their own skills and competences in working with disabled people, to improve their English language skills, to be informed about mobility programs in the EU, to meet people from different countries, to exchange experiences with them and to achieve co-operation in achieving common objectives – to increase the inclusion of people with disabilities in society. Each project, apart from the professional, leaves a personal impression – primarily the realization of personal relationships and friendship with other participants.
